App Update: American Express Mobile July 2015

American Express Mobile

I am a big fan of mobile apps that not only provide great features, but are intuitive to use. Hilton does a great job and so does American Express. Although I found nothing wrong with the previous version American Express Mobile recently did a complete summer makeover and for the most part, it’s not bad. The biggest move is the menu change from the side, which could be awkward at times to the bottom. Now you access four action buttons to navigate the app:

  1. Billing
  2. Activity
  3. Rewards
  4. Offers

Here is what American Express Mobile says about the update:

What’s New in Version 5.0
We’ve completely redesigned the app to highlight what your Membership has to offer. The streamlined experience includes improved navigation and quick access to rewards and offers. We’ve also optimized the app for iPhone 6 and 6 Plus while updating a number of features, some available only in the app.

-Clearer, simpler billing and a timeline of Card activity
-Touch ID login (available for supported devices with iOS 8+)
-Personalized offer alerts and a map of nearby offers
-Access to rewards and Card benefitsAmerican Express Mobile

Recent Activity

The app now has a more comprehensive view of your transactions. The separation from ‘pending’ and ‘posted’ looks a bit better.

The app updates how you view recent activity.

Paying and Viewing Your Statements

You can still view your statements, not much of a change outside of visual enhancements. What has changed is the immediate call to action when you first view your card that shows you everything you need to know to have a healthy credit relationship with American Express such as:

  • If a payment is due
  • When the payment is due
  • The ability to make a payment
  • Statement balance
  • Total balance

Amex Offers is Alive and Well

Amex Offers is probably one of those great benefits that can be a hit or miss depending on your needs and wants. For instance, finding the $10 off $75 or more from Whole Foods is great while saving $25 from Life Extension Supplements is not even a option I would think of taking. Like I said, hit or miss. That said, you never know what you are going to get so my advice is to check at least every other week to see if anything pops up that you like.

Although hit or miss, Amex Offers is a treasure trove of savings.
