Marriott Rewards 2016 Summer Global Promotion

Register Now For The Marriott Rewards 2016 Summer Global Promotion

Summer is right around the corner and Marriott Rewards is there waiting for you with their next promotion. The first thing to keep in mind, as with all Marriott promotions, is that you must register before the end of the promotion. Also, promotions tend to be targeted and vary customer to customer. That said, since this is ‘global’, I am interested to see if this is an all-encompassing promotion for all members.

Overall Value

This falls in line with most Marriott Rewards promotions. If you have participated in several MegaBonus promotions in the past, this will seem like more of the same. Not bad, but nothing to get excited about. At face value, 2,000 points may seem like a great deal, but let’s break it down.

The Good

Free points are free points. Just as long as you don’t all nerdy and calculate opportunity cost or cost of the room. You, now, because there’s no such thing as a free lunch.

The Bad

It doesn’t start until after the second stay. Why in the world Marriott continues to do this baffles me. There is also a five-day cap. Why a five-day cap? Why not just let it run throughout the course of the promotion.

The Ugly

The value of Marriott’s points seems to be waning. Not in a positive way. This is not to say that you cannot find value, it’s just harder to find value.

Two Point-Hunting Examples

Round One

In the first example, I took two premiere Marriott properties in Nashville, TN for the dates 16-17 June, 2016.

Marriott Rewards 2016 Summer Global Promotion
Two locations located in downtown Nashville, TN.

As you can see from the image posted above. Both properties ask for 40,000 points per night. Let’s take a look at the breakdown.

Property Renaissance Nashville Hotel Union Station Hotel
Location Nashville, TN Nashville, TN
Date 16-17 June 2016 16-17 June 2016
Points/Night 40,000 40,000
Member Rate $293 $273
0.0073/point 0.0068/point
AAA Rate $269 $264
0.0067/point 0.0066/point
 Cost of buying points $500 @ 0.0125/pt $500 @ 0.0125/pt

The last row is the money-maker or loser, depending on what side of the fence you are on. In short, if you were to buy the points and redeem, you would pay approximately $207 and $227 more. The valuation comes from points.com. If you were to use that valuation, your 2,000-point bonus would be worth $25, but looking at the actual redemption rate, it would average between $13.20 – $13.40; about a 47% devaluation.

Round Two

In the second example, I took two airport properties, lower price, lower point requirement.

Two locations near the Nashville Airport (BNA).
Property Residence Inn Nashville Airport Nashville Airport Marriott
Location Nashville, TN Nashville, TN

0.0078/point 0.0094/point

0.0076/point 0.0087/point
 *Cost of buying points $312.50 @ 0.0125/pt $375 @ 0.0125/pt

Point Evaluation Summary

Not good. You can plainly see that the estimated value is under 0.01 per point. Drastically lower than one penny per point. YMMV.
